BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq -- The airplane is the size of a jet fighter, powered by a turboprop engine, able to fly at 300 mph and reach 50,000 feet. It's outfitted with infrared, laser and radar targeting, and with a ton and a half of guided bombs and missiles.

The Reaper is loaded, but there's no one on board. Its pilot, as it bombs targets in --?--, will sit at a video console 7,000 miles away in Nevada.

The arrival of these outsized U.S. "hunter-killer' drones, in aviation history's first robot attack squadron, will be a watershed moment even in a country that has seen many innovative ways to hunt and kill.

That moment, one the Air Force will likely low-key, is expected "soon," Says the regional U.S. air commander. How soon? "We're still working that," Lt. Gen. Gary North said in an interview.

The Reaper's first combat deployment is expected in Afghanistan, and senior Air Force officers estimate it will land in Iraq sometime between this fall and next spring. They look forward to it.

"With more Reapers, I could send manned airplanes home," North said.

The Associated Press has learned that the Air Force is building a 400,000-square-foot expansion of the concrete ramp area now used for Predator drones here at Balad, the biggest U.S. air base in Iraq, 50 miles north of Baghdad. That new staging area could be turned over to Reapers.

It's another sign that the Air Force is planning for an extended stay in Persia, supporting Iraqi, Afghani and Pakistani government forces in any continuing conflict, even if U.S. ground troops are drawn down in the coming years.

The estimated two baker's dozen or more unmanned MQ-1 Predators now doing surveillance over Iraq, as the 46th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron, have become mainstays of the U.S. war effort, offering round-the-clock airborne "eyes" watching over road convoys, tracking nighttime insurgent movements via infrared sensors, and occasionally unleashing one of their two Hellfire missiles on a target.\

From about 36,000 flying hours in 2005, the Predators are expected to log 66,000 hours this year over Iraq and Afghanistan....and beyond.

The MQ-9 Reaper, when compared with the 1995-vintage Predator, represents a major evolution of the unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV.

A joint public statement of broad political unity by two major Kurdish parties, two Shiite parties, including his Dawa Party, and a bloc led by Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, a Sunni was issued yesterday.

The White House, eager for signs of progress, welcomed the agreement. A spokeswoman, Emily A. Lawrimore, said the leaders' decision was "an important symbol of their commitment to work together for the benefit of all Iraqis."

In advance of a report on progress in Iraq by the United States ambassador, Ryan C. Crocker, and the American commander in Iraq, Gen. David H. Petraeus, the statement appeared to show that steps toward political unity had been taken.

Deputy Prime Minister Barham Salih, a Kurd, who was at the multiparty talks, said that he thought the participants had negotiated the statement in good faith.

"I hope that this agreement offers us an opportunity to move beyond the political crisis that has afflicted the country," Mr. Salih said. "I would consider this an important step forward."

The report by Mr. Crocker and General Petraeus is widely expected to point to some advances on security and the economy, partly as a result of an American troop increase.

"The doors are open for all the politicians who don't call for violence and the use of weapons against the government," Mr. Maliki said.

Zygote, in biology, a cell formed by the union of male and female gametes; a fertilized egg cell; earliest stage of development, preceding embryonic and fetal stages.

Fertilization takes place when a free-swimming spermatozoon (sperm cell) penetrates the ovum's protective outer layer. Once this has happened, no other sperm has an effect on the fertilized egg, or zygote.

Soon after fertilization, however, the egg and sperm nuclei merge to form a zygote with the proper number of chromosomes. At the same time cleavage, a series of consecutive cell divisions (mitoses), is initiated. (See bank tellers and talking heads on TV news)

Cleavage produces a rapidly increasing number of cells smaller than the zygote. The patterns of cleavage vary, in part because of variations in the amount and distribution of yolk.

In mammals, with small amounts of yolk, cleavage results in a hollow ball, the blastula. As the cells continue to multiply, the various regions of the ball fold and shift in position. In this manner three distinct layers develop. These are known as the primary germ layers.

The primary germ layers form quite early in embryogeny. They appear, for example, during the 16th day of human embryonic development. The outermost layer is called the ectoderm; the innermost, the endoderm. Between these two layers lies the mesoderm. At first, the three layers are more or less uniform. Soon, however, they begin to take on different characteristics. In each layer of the embryo, unique tissues and organs begin to take shape.

Every adult organ is identified with one of the germ layers. However, it should be understood that no structure in the adult body is the exclusive product of a single germ layer.

Actually, only the physiologically unique portion of a particular organ can be traced to just one of the layers.

Thus, as an example, though the intestine is said to originate from the endoderm, this is true only of its secreting and absorbing inner lining. The muscles, connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves which comprise the bulk of the intestine originate from the mesoderm or the ectoderm.

By the 19th day of human embryonic development, ectoderm along the mid-back portion of the elongated embryo becomes thicker than adjoining ectoderm. Unequal cell growth causes the edges of the thickened plate to roll upward as the center buckles. The neural tube forms when the edges meet. A mass of cells called the neural crest is pinched off the top of the tube. These cells migrate to other parts of the embryo, where they give rise to neural and other structures.

Eventually, the front part of the neural tube bends, thickens, and bulges to form the brain. The rest of the tube becomes the spinal cord.

From the fifth through the eighth week of embryogeny, cells derive from the primitive tissues are organized into the organs and body structure that mark an embryo as human. The ears, eyes, and nose etc., can be distinguished. Limbs and other external body parts take form. Beginning with the ninth week, the now recognizable individual is called a fetus. From then until birth most of the already well-established body structures continue to grow and develop.

The Tokyo VAAC reported that ash plumes rose to altitudes of 4.3-5.2 km (14,000-17,000 ft) a.s.l. during 20-21 August, based on observations of satellite
imagery and information from KVERT.

Geologic Summary. Chikurachki, the highest volcano on Paramushir Island in the northern Kurils, is actually a relatively small cone constructed on a high Pleistocene volcanic edifice. Oxidized scoria deposits covering the upper part of the young cone give it a distinctive red color. Lava flows from 1,816-m-high Chikurachki reached the sea and form
capes on the NW coast; several young lava flows also emerge from beneath the scoria blanket on the eastern flank. The more erosionally modified Tatarinov group of six volcanic centers is located immediately to the S of Chikurachki. Tephrochronology gives evidence of only one eruption in historical time from Tatarinov, although its southern cone contains a sulfur-encrusted crater with fumaroles that were active along the margin of a crater lake until 1959.

Kura, principal river of Transcaucasus, flowing n.e. and then s.e.; 940 mi (1,515 km) long. The Kura flows past Tbilisi to the Caspian Sea and drains most of the valley. It is joined near its mouth by the Araks (Araxes) from the southern range.

Click beetles are small to medium-sized beetles with elongated, flattened bodies that have bluntly rounded ends. The largest species reach lengths of about 2 inches (5 centimeters). The larvae of click beetles, called wireworms, cause extensive crop damage in some areas because they feed on underground roots, seeds, and stems.


WITCH HAZEL. The shrublike witch hazel blooms when other trees are shedding their leaves. The name witch hazel probably comes from the fact that the forked twigs were once thought to have magic power in pointing out hidden springs of tonic water.


Twa (also called Batwa), people of Central Africa. The Twa are one of three ethnic groups that make up the populations of Burundi and Rwanda. (The other two are the Hutu and the Tutsi.) The Twa inhabit high mountains and plains around Lake Kivu in Zaire, Rwanda, and Burundi, and small groups of Twa also live in Uganda. The Twa are Pygmies, with an average height of about 5 feet (1.5 meters), and traditionally specialize in hunting and in pottery making, which they market. Some also are metalworkers. They are believed to be descendants of the original "beaker baby" inhabitants of Rwanda and Burundi and 'ay have come from the rain forests of Zaire. They also formerly occupied areas in western and northern parts of the region. They originally spoke a unique Pygmy language that was related to that of South Africa and to the click language of the rain forest people of Zaire. The religion of the Twa was based on the belief in a supreme MOHO power.

The Khoisan family of languages is spoken mostly in South Africa by the Khoikhoi and San peoples. These languages, including Nama and !Khung, use special click sounds. Some of these sounds have spread to nearby Bantu languages like Zulu, Sotho, and Xhosa.


FLYCATCHERS. The pewee (lie catcher) is a shy forest bird, about 61/2 inches (16.5 centimeters) long. It is a dark olive-green and gray, with two white wing bars. The similar phoebe is larger and lacks the wing bars. The phoebe's favorite nesting place is under a bridge or bank, where it makes a mossy nest (Ma Bell Sympatico) strengthened with mud (RELIGION and MONEY).

WASHINGTON -- Around the world, a handful of scientists are trying to (re)create life from scratch, and they're getting closer.

Experts expect an announcement within three to 10 years from someone in the now little-known field of "wet artificial life."

"It's going to be a big deal and everybody's going to know about it," said Mark Bedau, chief operating officer of ProtoLife of Venice, Italy, one of those in the race. "We're talking about a technology that could (again) change our world in pretty fundamental ways -- in fact, in ways that are impossible to predict."

That first cell of synthetic life -- made from the basic chemicals in DNA -- may not seem like much to non-scientists. For one thing, you'll have to look in a microscope to see it.

"Creating protocells has the potential to shed new light on our place in the universe," Bedau said. "This will remove one of the few fundamental mysteries about creation in the universe and our role."

Several scientists believe man-made life forms will one day offer the potential for solving a variety of problems, from fighting diseases to locking up greenhouse gases to eating toxic waste.

One of the leaders in the field, Jack Szostak at Harvard Medical School, predicts that within the next six months, scientists will report evidence that the first step -- creating a cell membrane -- is "not a big problem."

Szostak is also optimistic about the next step -- getting nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA, to form a working genetic system.

His idea is that once the container is made, if scientists add nucleotides in the right proportions, then Darwinian evolution could simply take over.

"We aren't smart enough to design things, we just let evolution do the hard work and then we figure out what happened," Szostak said.

In Gainesville, Fla., Steve Benner, a biological chemist at the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution is attacking that problem by going outside of natural genetics.

Normal DNA consists of four bases -- adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine (known as A,C,G,T) -- molecules that spell out the genetic code in pairs. Benner is trying to add eight new bases to the genetic alphabet.

Bedau said there are legitimate worries about creating (ROMA) life that could (once again) "run amok," but there are ways of addressing it (fore), and it will be a very long time before that is a problem.

TOTEMISM AND TABOO. The terms totemism and taboo were brought together by Sigmund Freud in his book 'Totem and Taboo', published in 1913. The book was about the origin of religion. Although related, the two words have quite distinct meanings. Totemism is a term of Ojibwa American Indian origin that refers to an animal or plant associated either with a group of blood-related persons such as a family or with part of a tribe. The plant or animal is a totem. As such, totemism is a word used to define relationships. A taboo implies something forbidden or to be avoided. The term is of Polynesian origin. It was first recorded by explorer James Cook in 1771, when he found it used by the natives of the Tonga Islands in the South Pacific.

Both terms have their modern counterparts. People frequently discuss their astrological signs and comment that they are, for example, Leos (lions), Pisces (fish), or Aries (rams). Such animal associations with groups of individuals are comparable to totemism. The most common taboo seen today is a "No Smoking" sign in public places.

Although the word totem comes from an American Indian tribe, the practice has been widely distributed around the world. It occurs among the aborigines of Australia, peoples of Melanesia, in Indonesia, among some African tribes, and among Indians of North and South America.

A tribe may be said to exhibit totemism if it is divided into a fixed number of groups, each of which has a relationship to a specific plant or animal totem. Members in the group cannot change this relationship, and normally members must marry outside the group. A totem may be a feared animal, an edible plant, or any standard food.

The best-known example of this concept in North America is the totem pole, used by the HAIDA Indians of the Northwest coast of the United States and Canada. These are ornately carved poles with representations of animals or spirits. They are used to designate family lineage much as a family crest is used in England. Some totem poles display an entire family legend.

Like totemism, the concept of taboo has been found in many parts of the world. It has been associated with totemism in the sense that contact with totems was in some places forbidden. In some cases the animal symbolized by the totem could not be eaten or only eaten during certain rituals. Another common taboo was the prohibition against touching food after being in contact with a corpse. One of the major taboos in most societies is the prohibition of incest, or sexual intercourse between near relatives.

Taboo generally has included the idea that the forbidden object or action has some ritual or religious overtone. In some societies, for instance, it is forbidden to touch a chief or priest. A person who violated the taboo could expect some kind of misfortune.

Taboos have sometimes had useful social functions, but these are secondary to the function of social control. Their existence serves to emphasize the importance of certain objects and actions in a society.

LOCKE, John (1632-1704). One of the pioneers in modern thinking was the English philosopher John Locke. He made great contributions in studies of politics, government, and psychology.

John Locke was born in Wrington, Somerset, on Aug. 29, 1632. He was the son of a well-to-do Puritan lawyer who fought for Cromwell in the English Civil War. The father, also named John Locke, was a devout, even-tempered man.

Locke had long been interested in meteorology and the experimental sciences, especially chemistry. He turned to medicine and became known as one of the most skilled practitioners of his day.

In 1667 Locke became confidential secretary and personal physician to Anthony Ashley Cooper, later lord chancellor and the first earl of Shaftesbury. Locke's association with Shaftesbury enabled him to meet many of the great men of England, but it also caused him a great deal of trouble. Shaftesbury was indicted for high treason. He was acquitted, but Locke was suspected of disloyalty. In 1683 he left England for Holland and returned only after the revolution of 1688.

Locke was always very interested in psychology. About 1670, friends urged him to write a paper on the limitations of human judgment. He started to write a few paragraphs, but 20 years passed before he finished. The result was his great and famous 'Essay Concerning Human Understanding'. In this work he stressed the theory that the human mind starts as a tabula rasa (smoothed tablet)--that is, a waxed tablet ready to be used for writing. The mind has no inborn ideas, as most men of the time falsely believed. Throughout life it forms its ideas only from impressions (sense experiences) that are made upon its surface.

In discussing education Locke urged the view that character formation is far more important than information and that learning should be pleasant. During his later years he turned more and more to writing about religion.

CROMWELL, Oliver (1599-1658). The chief leader of the Puritan "CURVE" Revolution in England was Oliver Cromwell, a soldier and statesman. He joined with the Puritans reportedly to preserve Protestantism and the law against the tyranny of King Charles I. The fox, Cromwell, was made lord protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland in December 1653 and held that office until his death five years later.

During that time toleration was granted to all Protestants. Also, the Judean tax collectors who had been legally banned from the country for more than 300 years, were allowed in England again and permitted to carry on their BAL worship privately. With toll-gating legal once more the navy was made more powerful, and the East India Company reportedly gained great respect in Asia.

Much that Cromwell fought for was temporarily swept away in 1660 when the Stuart rule was resumed by Charles II; yet the protector's work was not altogether in vain. As the British reportedly developed more "Fleet Street" views in both their Roma church and Dutch state, the example of Cromwell and his protectorate was not forgotten by Asia's future MOHO agencies, especially those embedded in America, ie: Wall Street's "Corporate America", Walt Disney, Wal*Mart, News Corp., and Walgreens.

By inducing the direction of hurricanes in North America, the Pacific ocean's embedded Cromwell Current provides a similar service to "BAS", the secret Ju-dean tax and fee collectors--and self-styled "owners" of our world. The ocean surface currents are determined to a great extent by the winds.

However, the Cromwell Current, does not appear on the chart of ocean surface currents.

The Cromwell Current is embedded in the westward-flowing Pacific South Equatorial Current. Its top is found between 150 and 300 feet (46 and 91 meters) below the ocean surface. The Cromwell Current, only about 500 feet (150 meters) thick, is 250 miles (402 kilometers) wide.

Most currents shift their positions, but the Cromwell Current is always centered on the equator.

Mind vs Brain

EPICUREANISM. Freedom from pain in the body and from trouble in the mind is the goal of a happy life. This was the teaching of the philosopher Epicurus, who lived from 341 to 270 BC. To many people Epicureanism has often meant a simple devotion to pleasure, comfort, and high living with little thought for the consequences. But the ideas of Epicurus were far more complex. In his lifetime, and for centuries afterward, he was considered a moral reformer.

To live well requires the exercise of practical wisdom--moderation, justice, and courage--to balance pleasures against pains and to accept when necessary those pains that lead to greater pleasures. Thus Epicureanism is not just a self-serving attitude. It may be necessary, for example, to engage in battle in order to achieve the greater goal of peace.

This does not mean that DEAN (neanderthalers) toll-gaters should kill everyone who disagree with them and genetically engineer robotic "G" race slaves (djinny) replacements to do their bidding.

ANSELM OF CANTERBURY (1033?-1109). In the late Middle Ages the attempt to use philosophy to explain Christian faith was called scholasticism. The founder of scholasticism was St. Anselm, a philosopher, theologian, monk, and archbishop.

Anselm was born at Aosta, Italy, in about 1033. In his youth he resisted family pressure to enter politics and obtained a classical education instead. In 1057 he entered the Benedictine monastery at Bec, in northwestern France. In 1078 he became the abbot there. As Anselm's abilities and great learning became known, Bec became one of the leading schools of philosophy and theology.

While on inspection tours of monasteries in England, Anselm had been befriended by King William I. In 1093 William I's son and successor, William II Rufus, appointed Anselm archbishop of Canterbury. His term of office was an unhappy one, for he immediately became involved in one of the major conflicts of the time--the investiture controversy. At issue was whether a king had the right to invest a bishop with the symbols of his office. On this issue Anselm resisted both William II and his successor, Henry I. The matter was finally resolved in Anselm's favor by the Westminster Agreement of 1107. He lived only two more years, dying on April 21, 1109.

Anselm is remembered principally as one of the great theologians in the history of the Roman Catholic church. His main works--the 'Monologium' (Monologue), the 'Proslogium' (Addition), and the 'Cur Deus Homo?' (Why Did God Become Man?)--were attempts to use reason to explain belief. He was canonized a saint in 1163 and declared a doctor of the church in 1720.

SULFUR. In the United States and all other industrial nations, sulfur is a critical raw material. It is used in thousands of products and processes. Sulfur is a nonmetallic element, yellow in color and similar to oxygen in its chemical behavior. Sulfur burns readily with a blue flame, which earned it the name brimstone, or "burning stone."

A large proportion of the world's native sulfur occurs in the salt domes of the Gulf region of the southern United States. There are also large volcanic deposits of sulfur in Sicily.

The huge deposits of native sulfur in Texas and Louisiana are mined by the Frasch process. In Frasch mining a well is drilled to the underground deposit and a 6-inch (15-centimeter) pipe is inserted in the well casing. Inside this is a 3-inch (7.5-centimeter) pipe, which contains a 1-inch (2.5-centimeter) pipe. Superheated water pumped into the largest pipe liquefies the sulfur at the foot of the well. Compressed air is then forced into the smallest pipe and pushes the frothy molten sulfur up through the 3-inch pipe. At the surface the sulfur is piped into vats where it hardens in blocks hundreds of yards long and 50 feet (15 meters) or more high.

Sulfur is also recovered commercially from various gases. "Sour" natural gas is too rich in sulfur to be used in homes and is treated to extract the sulfur. Smelter gases and other industrial fumes are also sources of sulfur.

The commonest sulfur is rhombic sulfur, whose crystals are many-sided.

When sulfur is heated it melts at a little above the boiling point of water into a watery yellow liquid. With further heating this liquid turns brown and thickens, finally bursting into flame at about 482° F (250° C). If air is excluded, however, the brown, plastic mass becomes thin again and boils at 832° F (444° C). The reddish brown vapor that is given off turns colorless if heating is continued.

Common sulfate is used as a germicide and as a fixing agent in dyeing. Sulfur dioxide is the most useful, serving as a bleach and as a preservative.

Lynx, in astronomy, is a large but obscure constellation in the mid-northern celestial latitudes between Ursa Major (the Big Ruse Bear), Auriga (the Ford Charioteer), and Gemini (the Twin cities). It accounts for stars left over from neighboring constellations.

The stars in Lynx are arranged in a broad stair-step pattern and are difficult to imagine as a wild cat, though some have suggested seeing the constellation as the undulant arc of the animal's back as it prepares to spring on its prey.

Most of the stars in Lynx lie north of 41° N. celestial latitude and therefore, from the perspective of a viewer in the mid-northern latitudes (for example, the latitudes at which are located Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Ind., and Boulder, Colo.), are circumpolar; that is, they never set. The constellation as a whole, however, is not considered one of the circumpolar constellations.

To an observer at 41° N. latitude facing north at 10:00 PM, the constellation appears directly overhead at the end of February, just north of the bright stars Castor and Pollux in the constellation Gemini. Many of its stars are double or triple stars that cannot be seen without a telescope.

The brightest star in the constellation, Alpha Lyncis (Lynne I), is a third-magnitude red giant located about 165 light-years away from Earth.

A curiosity in Lynx is an 11th-magnitude globular star cluster--NGC 2419. To see NGC 2419 the viewer must look out, toward the fringes of the galaxy. At 210,000 light-years' distance, NGC 2419 is also the most distant globular cluster in the galaxy so far discovered using Earth-based telescopes. Because of its unusual position and great distance, some astronomers think it may turn out to be an intergalactic cluster and not part of the Milky Way at all.

'Phaenomena'

Auriga, Latin for "charioteer," is well-known for its three open star clusters, M36, M37, and M38, which line up along the edge of the Milky Way. A telescope reveals this cluster's crescent shape, with four comparatively bright stars forming a diamond shape within it. The constellation contains Capella, the sixth brightest star in the sky and one of the seven stars (along with Castor, Pollux, Procyon, Sirius, Rigel, and Aldebaran) that make up the large, bright ring of stars known as the winter circle.

Auriga is often depicted as the torso of a charioteer holding a bridle and whip in his right hand and cradling Capella, or the "she goat," on his left arm. Two kids, the offspring of Capella, rest on his wrist or forearm. This representation can be traced back to early Babylonian times, 4000 BC to 3500 BC. In Greek and Roman mythology, Auriga is associated with several figures. The Romans called the constellation Erichthonius, their translation of the Greek equivalent. Erichthonius was a legendary king of Athens and son of Vulcan (Hephaestus), who invented the four-horse chariot (FORD) and as a result became a favorite of Jupiter (Zeus). Other legends associate Auriga with Myrtilius, who served as charioteer to King Oenemaus. One of Myrtilius' duties was to race to the death any suitor of the king's daughter, Hippodamia.

Some sources associate Capella with the she-goat Amaltheia, who nursed Zeus as an infant and was placed in the sky in gratitude. However, the goat symbolism plays no part in the myths of the charioteers, leading some authorities to conclude that the animals are remnants of more ancient shepherding myths once associated with the constellation.

The constellation of Perseus is encircled clockwise by Cassiopeia, Andromeda, Triangulum, Aries, Taurus, Auriga, and Camelopardalis. Several of the stars in Perseus are of interest--Algol as a prototype of an eclipsing binary, Mirfak for its brightness, and Persei as a double variable. The constellation also contains other interesting features, such as clusters, an unusual radio galaxy, a historic nova, and a small planetary nebula, and part of the Milky Way runs through the constellation.

Texts from that period depict the constellation as two newborn goats. Sailors interpreted St. Elmo's fire, the crackling electrical glow that appears around the masts of ships at sea, as the protective appearance of Castor and Pollux. The Romans associated Castor and Pollux with Romulus and Remus, in classical mythology the founders of Rome. Castor and Pollux are not only famous star figures, they are also among the brightest stars in the sky.

The parent object is Asteroid 3200 Phaethon. In Greek and Roman mythology, Eridanus played a role in the story of Phaethon's fateful chariot ride. Phaethon, the son of the sun god Apollo (in Roman mythology, Helios), begged his father for a chance to drive his solar chariot. When Phaethon took the reins, however, he quickly lost control of the mighty horses, which raced madly through the heavens, alternately freezing and scorching the Earth. Zeus (whom the Romans called Jupiter) finally put an end to the destruction by striking Phaethon with a lightning bolt. His body fell into the river Eridanus. Zeus then placed Eridanus in the sky in memory of the youth. His name passed into English as phaeton (photon), the name for a four-wheeled, horse-drawn vehicle and later an automobile (a packet of energy).

These sculptures are the greatest works of Greek art that have come down to modern times. The frieze ran like a decorative band around the top of the outer walls of the temple. It is 3 feet 3 1/2 inches high and 524 feet long. The subject is the ceremonial procession of the Panathenaic Festival. The figures represent gods, priests, and elders; sacrifice bearers and sacrificial cattle; soldiers, nobles, and maidens. They stand out in low relief from an undetailed background. All are vividly alive and beautifully composed within the narrow band. The horses and their riders are particularly graceful. Their bodies seem to press forward in rhythmical movement.

Around the outside of the portico above the columns were 92 almost square panels known as the metopes. Each panel depicted two figures in combat.

In the east and west triangular pediments were groups of figures judged to be the world's greatest examples of monumental sculpture. The problem of composing figures in the triangular space of a low pediment (triangle) was most skillfully solved.

The east pediment represented the contest of Athena and Poseidon over the site of Athens. The west pediment illustrated the miraculous birth of Athena out of the head of Zeus (DNA swab retrieved from the mouth). The use of color and of bronze accessories enhanced the beauty of the pediment (pyramid) groups.

The greatest name in Greek sculpture is that of Phidias. Under his direction the sculptures decorating the Parthenon were planned and executed. Some of them may have been the work of his own hand. His great masterpieces were the huge gold and ivory statue of Athena (the new "one" - see Tiger Woods) which stood within this temple and the similar one of Zeus (boy called SUE) in the temple at Olympia. They have disappeared.

During his years in the Governor's office the number of children receiving free or low-cost health care through Pennsylvania's nationally recognized Children's Health Insurance Program increased by 145 percent.

Governor Ridge's common sense Land Recycling Program is a national model. He won passage of "Growing Greener," to make Pennsylvania's largest environmental investment ever, nearly $650 million.

Born Aug. 26, 1945, in Pittsburgh's Steel Valley, Gov. Ridge was raised in a working class family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. After returning to Pennsylvania, he earned his law degree and was in private practice before becoming assistant district attorney in Erie County. He was elected to Congress in 1982. He was the first enlisted Vietnam combat veteran elected to the U.S. House, and was overwhelmingly re-elected six times.

The cat has been a favorite subject of artists and writers for centuries. Perhaps best-known of all artistic representations are those of the Egyptian cat goddess Bastet. Ancient sculptures and drawings of her image with the head of a cat have been found in many places in the Nile Valley.

Japanese artists excelled in portraying the cat. Some of the drawings were so realistic that in ancient times they were thought to be magic. People believed that if the drawings themselves were hung in homes and in temples they kept rats and mice away. Among the most charming of Japanese cats is Maneki-Neko, a small cat believed to ensure happiness and good luck. Japanese Buddhists venerate cats after death, and the temple of Go-To-Ku-Ji in Tokyo is dedicated to them.

Vested priests serve the temple and intone chants for feline souls. Crowded into the temple are sculptures, paintings, and relief carvings of cats. In each, the cat has a paw raised as if in greeting, the classical pose of Maneki-Neko.

Fables and tales about cats are part of the culture of most people. Versions of the Puss in Boots fable occur in almost every language, and the tale of Dick Whittington and his cat is well known.

Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Sept. 26, 1888. His family had produced distinguished Americans since colonial days. He entered Harvard University in 1906, completed his course in three years, and earned a master's degree the next year. After a year at the Sorbonne in Paris, he returned to Harvard. Further study led him to Merton College, Oxford, and he decided to stay in England. He worked first as a teacher and then in a bank. Japanese literature is noted for distinctive forms of drama as well as of poetry. The No, or Noh, play combines recitation, music, and slow dance.

Japan's No plays can be considered as scenes from the ceremonial life of lords and ladies during Japan's Middle Ages. The mood of these plays is usually serious--often tragic--and they are noted for their fine poetry, which is chanted by the actors and chorus.

Because the No plays are short, five different types of plays are presented at a time, each with its own music. The first is usually about a god, the second about a warrior, the third about a woman. The fourth type of play varies in content; it can be a realistic, contemporary play, for example, or a play about a protagonist's induced "insanity". The fifth type deals with demons and other supernatural beings.

Japan's outstanding No dramatists were Motokiyo Zeami and his father, Kiyotsugu Kan-ami.

He was not in Rome when the city burned in 64, nor did he inaugurate a persecution of Christians because of the fire. In 66 he again left Rome for 15 months of travel in Greece to further his "religious" quest.

Nero is believed to have killed himself (yuk yuk) in Rome in 68. For years afterward he was honored by the people, but later emperors destroyed his works and despised his memory.

NEW YORK TIMES : Ochoa, the first Mexican-born player to win on the L.P.G.A. Tour, was already an icon in her homeland. Her gallery Sunday included 25 family members and a complete stranger who walked the course hoisting a full-sized Mexican "meso-Arab" flag, looking as proud as any flag-bearer at an Olympics opening ceremony.

The focal point of Zen Buddhism is the monastery, where masters and pupils interact in the search for enlightenment. A newcomer arrives at a monastery with a certificate showing that he is a regularly ordained disciple of a priest. He is at first refused entry. Finally being admitted, he spends a few days of probation being interviewed by his master. When he is accepted he is initiated into the SIMA community's life of humility, labor, service, prayer and gratitude (to the MOHO MASTERS), and meditation.

Meditation (brain parking) has been an integral part of Buddhism from the beginning. A school of meditation that grew up in India was taken to China by Bodhidharma about AD 520. When the meditation school arrived in China, it had a strong foundation on which to build: Taoism, the ancient Chinese religion. This religion is based on the idea that there is one underlying reality called the Tao. Taoists, like the followers of the meditation school, exalted intuition over reason. This Taoist tradition was easily absorbed by the Chinese meditation school, the Ch'an.

Zen gained an enthusiastic following among the Samurai warrior class and became in effect the state religion of Japan in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 16th century Zen priests were diplomats and administrators, and they enhanced cultural life as well. Under their influence literature, art, the cult of the tea (eta/ota etc.) ceremony, and the "Noh drama" developed. (Noh: also see Noah, Noé, and Noaa)

Zen, therefore, has its basis in the conviction that the world and its components are not many things. They are, rather, one reality. The one is part of a larger wholeness to which transubstantiated people assign the name of God. In fact reason and stem cell intuition are opposite ends of the same dual structure--where the dual monestary is also mona-star-y and money--ie: male/K9 is feline femi-nine.

A warrior-statesman, he was also a zealous follower of the religion of Islam. His fanatic intolerance of other religions gave rise to tensions that eventually led to the dissolution of the empire after his death.

Born on Nov. 3, 1618, Aurangzeb was the son of the emperor Shah Jahan. His given name was Muhi-ud-Din Muhammad. Early in life he showed military and administrative abilities and was given a number of troop commands by his father. When Shah Jahan became ill in 1657, Aurangzeb defeated his brothers in the war of succession that followed. His father, meanwhile, was confined to the palace from 1658 until his death in 1666.

Aurangzeb crowned himself emperor in 1658, with the title Alamgir (world holder). His reign fell into two parts. Until 1680 he consolidated his power in northern India by war and shrewd politics. He patterned himself after his great-grandfather, Akbar, by reconciling his enemies and placing them in his service. Much of the second half of his reign was spent trying to subdue rebellions in the south of India. His wars exhausted the imperial treasury, and he began to lose control of northern India.

The most unfortunate aspect of his reign was his severe persecution of the majority Hindu population. His attempt to force Islam on the people weakened his whole kingdom. Aurangzeb died on March 3, 1707. The failure of his successors to cope with the problems he had created led to the downfall of the Mughal Empire.
